A leaf-tailed gecko disappears against the bark

Published · Updated

A leaf-tailed gecko disappears against the bark through a close match of mottled color and rough texture. Its flattened body follows the trunk, with four splayed legs and broad toe pads keeping it close to the surface. The wide tail extends upward like another irregular patch of bark.

Soft side light reveals the animal's outline and a small eye without breaking the surrounding camouflage. Fine cracks, lichen and a curled brown leaf provide smaller details around it. A narrow strip of green woodland falls out of focus beside the trunk, keeping the whole gecko within a living forest setting while inviting a closer look at its carefully hidden shape.
