A pink sea pen rises from the dark sand

Published · Updated

A pink sea pen rises from the sandy seabed like an open feather. A thick central stalk supports paired rows of curved branches, each lined with tiny pale polyps. The branches bend at different angles, making a loose and irregular outline. Several tips curl inward while others extend into the clear blue water.

The feathery polyps catch more light than the broad translucent surfaces beneath them. Their fine points contrast with the smooth stalk and its rounded base. Dark grains gather around the place where the animal enters the sand, connecting the delicate upper structure with the heavier ground below. Small shell fragments and scattered stones interrupt the rippled surface.

A second smaller colony stands farther away at the right. Beyond it, a low dark rise fades into the water. The surface overhead carries a bright cyan shimmer that gradually deepens to cobalt near the horizon. A few suspended particles catch the light between these layers. The tall view keeps both the intricate animal and its open underwater surroundings in the same calm composition.
