A yellow bullfrog calls beside the reeds

Published · Updated

A yellow bullfrog calls beside the reeds with two cobalt-blue cheek sacs inflated at its jaw. Its raised dark eyes, bumpy back and pale toes remain distinct above the wet stone. The forelegs support the body near the water, while the folded hind legs rest farther behind.

Thin green stems rise around the small perch, and narrow fallen reed blades lie across the softer background. Reflections pick up the frog’s strong yellow color without hiding the texture of its skin. Small ripples cross the brown-green pool, giving the low viewpoint a sense of the surrounding wetland and the movement around this otherwise firmly planted animal.
