Black skimmer slices the tidal channel
Published · Updated
A black skimmer follows a tidal channel through a broad salt marsh at sunset. Its open wings rise above the water, showing pale undersides bordered by long dark feathers. The bird keeps its body low while the longer lower part of its bill touches the surface beneath the shorter raised upper part.
A fine wake stretches back from that small point of contact. The pale belly and dark wings form a broken reflection among gentle ripples, giving the flight a clear relationship with the water below. A few tiny droplets catch the remaining light near the bill. The narrow channel provides open space ahead of the moving bird.
Green marsh grass grows in rounded islands on either side. Their edges lead into the distance as the water curves toward a dark line of trees. Above, peach clouds surround a small low sun, warming the upper sky and scattered reflections. Cool blue water fills the foreground and balances that glow. The tall composition joins a precise feeding action to the quiet scale of the surrounding coast.
