City Lights Beyond the Great Clock Face

Published · Updated

Large brass gears overlap in the foreground of a tall clock tower. Their toothed rims, dark shafts and hanging chains lead upward toward an enormous round clock face, whose pale outer panels glow warmly. Heavy iron hands cross the transparent centre. Beyond them, rows of city lights trace the rooftops and a bridge beneath a deep blue night sky.

A girl in an oversized grey wool coat stands beside the frame, one hand resting on the ironwork. Her long dark braid falls down her back, and a red scarf adds a quiet patch of colour. She looks outward through the opening, small beside the scale of the mechanism and the broad illuminated dial.

The oblique view reveals the depth between the close machinery and the city beyond. Scratched metal, aged stone and uneven floorboards keep the interior tactile, while the distant lights remain fine and clear. Warm illumination on the clock contrasts with the cool open sky, turning an ordinary view of the rooftops into a private lookout within the workings of time.
