Forest sinkhole opens beneath the limestone rim
Published · Updated
A forest sinkhole opens beneath a rugged limestone rim, holding a green canopy far below the surrounding hills. Pale cliff bands curve around the hollow in broken, irregular layers. Darker recesses interrupt the rock face, and vegetation follows the cracks where small ledges offer a place to grow.
Morning light crosses the trees in a broad diagonal swath. Individual crowns vary in height, shape and shade, with a few slender trunks rising above the lower growth. Mist lingers along the left wall, softening the transition from stone to foliage. The dense canopy gives the hollow a living floor while leaving its remarkable depth easy to read.
Rough rock and tufts of grass occupy the near ledge. Their sharp detail contrasts with the softer blue-green hills beyond the far rim. A narrow stretch of clear sky completes the view without reducing the sense of enclosure. The photograph follows the landscape from small foreground textures to enormous cliff walls and the forest resting between them, creating a continuous passage through several very different scales.
