Rangers measure the giant sequoia trunk

Published · Updated

A sequoia trunk towers over two rangers holding a measuring tape around its broad base. Each keeps a section against the bark, looking along the pale line as it follows the tree's curve. Their small figures make the scale immediately understandable. Olive shirts and dark trousers sit quietly within the surrounding greens and browns, leaving the immense living column as the dominant subject.

Deep vertical furrows divide the cinnamon bark into long ridges. Near the ground, the trunk spreads into heavy roots that rise above the forest floor before disappearing beneath needles, twigs and ferns. The tape bridges the smaller grooves while remaining close to the larger curve, giving the practical measurement a clear place within the tree's uneven surface.

More tall trunks stand behind in softened layers of mist and light. Sun reaches the left side of the main tree, picking out coarse bark and low vegetation while the opposite side stays cool. The photograph moves from the delicate fern fronds near the ground to the huge trunk rising beyond the frame, joining human attention with an expansive forest setting.
