The Globe of Rusted Links
Published · Updated
A hollow iron globe stands on a low stone plinth in a sheltered garden. Its surface is built from rectangular links, joined at changing angles to make an intricate spherical lattice. Orange-brown rust covers the bars, while brighter welds mark their intersections. Openings between the links reveal the garden and the darker structure at the back of the globe. A larger oval gap near its lower edge makes the empty interior especially clear.
Clipped trees frame the sculpture against a weathered brick wall. Tawny grasses, pale flower heads and purple asters soften the gravel court around it. Recent rain has darkened the stone path, and fallen leaves gather at the foot of the plinth. Low sunlight reaches through the autumn canopy, catching the edges of the iron and casting broken shadows beneath it. The broad view keeps the whole sculpture visible, from its rounded top to its moss-marked base.
