A rainy tram rounds the stone corner

Published · Updated

A rainy tram rounds a stone corner, following the sweep of rails through a narrow street. Its cream upper body and ochre front catch the glow of nearby lamps, while the circular headlamp throws a bright reflection onto the wet cobblestones. People remain visible through the front windows, gathered inside the warm light as rain falls beyond the glass.

The tram's long roof pole reaches an overhead wire. More wires cross between the tall buildings, echoing the curves and diagonals below. Wrought metal balconies, shuttered windows and worn stone walls give the street a close, layered shape. Adults carrying dark umbrellas keep to the raised pavements on either side.

The rails guide the eye from the lower foreground to the vehicle, then onward toward the waterfront and small hillside homes. Gold reflections break into individual puddles and uneven stones. Above them, the cool blue evening softens the distant buildings. The scene draws its energy from that winding route and the different ways people move through the rain.
