Red Sprites Rise above the Distant Storm
Published · Updated
Red sprites appear as fine branching threads high above a distant thunderstorm. Uneven pink and red lines hang in a small cluster against the dark sky, with broken bead-like segments along some of the brighter strands. A wide stretch of deep blue separates this delicate light from the low cloud bank over the quiet night meadow.
The storm gathers across the horizon in several overlapping layers. Pale lavender light glows from within the clouds and fades toward a distant curtain of rain. Small stars remain scattered through the upper sky, giving the thin red branches a different texture from the broader illuminated clouds. The restrained cluster leaves much of the tall frame open and dark.
Two pale wheel ruts lead through dry grasses in the foreground. Their rough edges gradually disappear toward a low line of trees, where the field becomes a narrow silhouette beneath the storm. Subtle brown tones remain in the closest grass while the horizon takes on a cooler cast. The empty landscape gives the fleeting-looking lights a broad and quiet setting.
