The Cat That Curled Round the Lighthouse
Published · Updated
A gigantic black cat has found a resting place around the base of a white lighthouse. Its back curves behind the tower, its head rests near the little railing and its long tail hangs over the rocks toward the breaking surf. Half-closed green eyes give the enormous animal a calm, sleepy expression. Individual strands of dark fur catch the light, while gulls cross the sky above the familiar scale of the keeper's cottage.
Across the water, two children in yellow and red raincoats stand beside stacked lobster pots on the harbour quay. A warm lamp lights the wet stones near their boots, contrasting with the silver sea and clouded moon overhead. The lighthouse sends a bright beam out across the night, and a small moored boat rocks below the wall. Distance separates the little watchers from the vast cat, making the peaceful scene feel both believable and impossible.
