The Copper and Iron Country Kitchen
Published · Updated
A suspended rack of copper cookware gives this vaulted stone kitchen its warm centre of attention. Broad pans, small saucepans and rounded kettles hang above a substantial black range, their varied surfaces catching daylight from the tall window at the left. Brass handles and rails add finer points of brightness to the dark iron. Behind the cooker, a small fire burns in a deep stone hearth, surrounded by more copper utensils arranged along the pale masonry walls.
The room has a generous height, with a barrel vault built from blocks that retain their uneven texture and subtle colour changes. Heavy floor flags reflect the window in soft patches, showing worn edges and shallow surface irregularities. An oak preparation table holds produce near the sink, with wicker baskets stored beneath it. Through a small arched doorway, shelves of cream ceramic jars suggest an adjoining pantry. Linen towels, simple wooden stools and leafy branches complete the scene. The photograph celebrates a kitchen shaped by durable materials, useful objects and the steady warmth of a hearth.
