Charcoal geometric bands decorate rounded ochre courtyard walls beside earthen stairs, a small tree, clay jars and a shaded doorway.

The Courtyards Painted in Earth and Chalk

Published · Updated

Charcoal and pale mineral bands follow the rounded walls of these earthen homes. Triangles, diamonds and small chequered fields turn around corners and continue along the upper parapets. Their slightly uneven edges sit naturally on the grainy plaster. The decoration belongs to the architecture, marking the route through the courtyard rather than appearing as a separate surface display.

A broad stair rises beside the entrance passage toward the upper rooms. Its worn treads and softened sides echo the curved walls below. In the central court, a small tree grows from a low planted bed beside a built-in bench. A woven mat and plain clay jars add quiet domestic details, while a dark doorway reveals another sunlit space beyond.

Morning light reaches the stair and upper walls, leaving the near passage in cool shade. The tree casts small moving shapes across the ground and plaster. This changing light makes the depth of the compound clear, from the patterned entrance walls to the distant court. The whole place combines modest materials, patient painted work and a welcoming sequence of outdoor rooms.
