The Ochre Column Reading Salon

Published · Updated

Cream fluted columns divide this sunlit reading salon into a central room and two raised alcoves. Their grey stone bases continue into shallow steps, while a dark timber ceiling brings weight and warmth above. At the left, an ochre wall is patterned with repeating fans and a narrow border of olive leaves. A wooden daybed with pale cushions sits against it, creating a sheltered place to rest. The adjoining window bay opens to a bright terrace and a distant blue coastline.

A substantial wooden table occupies the middle of the room, surrounded by simple chairs with woven seats. Closed books, a bowl of lemons and leafy stems give the table a relaxed, useful character. Underfoot, small pale mosaic stones form a textured field within borders of black meanders and terracotta diamonds. Morning light crosses these patterns and picks out the fluting on the columns. Linen throws, bronze lanterns and plain plaster walls soften the formal structure. The photograph offers a detailed view of a room where classical geometry and everyday comfort sit naturally together.
