The Painted Rosette Stairwell

Published · Updated

Painted flowers follow the curved undersides of this rising oval stairwell, turning the structure itself into a continuous decorative surface. Pale blue-grey panels carry dusty rose medallions, small green leaves and cream scrolling stems. Narrow borders trace the stair edges and lead the eye upward through successive levels toward a circular glazed skylight. Dark wooden handrails form clear nested curves, supported by slender brass-toned balusters with small ornamental details at their centres.

The lowest stone steps sweep into the room beside tall windows, which fill the pale plaster walls with soft daylight. A dark wooden bench and a large green vase of flowering branches furnish the entrance landing without interrupting the view above. Underfoot, a circular mosaic repeats the floral geometry in cream, grey, green and muted red stone. The photograph makes the stair's painted undersides the main attraction, revealing an area of architecture that often goes unnoticed. Light, curved construction and delicate surface decoration work together to give the whole vertical space a distinctive, graceful rhythm.
